“I was seeing a lot of books by white males, not many women, hardly any women of color.”, said Bola. She emphasizes in her book on some pointers that are things she did and we can also do by ourselves:
- Contributing to my employer-sponsored retirement account
- Keeping expenses low
- Saving half of the salary and most or all of every bonus, raise and tax refund I received, and Increasing income by starting own side business (a wedding & lifestyle photography business)
- And most importantly, believing in yourself and developing the mindset that you can succeed – especially when other people doubted that you couldn’t do it.”
Bola Sokunbi is the founder of Clever girl finance born in Austria. She is the money expert behind the online financial support service Clever Girl Finance and author of a new finance book bearing the same name. Her achievements seem unattainable and intimidating but she shares stories of her financial journey, including her money mistakes and financial redemption, to educate and empower a new generation of women.
In Clever Girl Finance’s early stages, Sokunbi was also working in technology strategy and, with her husband, raising her twin babies. “I was at the stage where I didn’t feel very fulfilled at my job,” she said. “I wanted to do something that mattered.” So she quit her full-time job and decided to focus on Clever Girl Finance full-time—a decision that, at first, seemed like a mistake. Between August to December, she had made only $200, but with her husband’s support, she continued. Bola noticed a recurring theme that women do not talk about money and financial wellness enough. Realizing that many women may not take control of their financial situation due to the lack of support or encouragement, Bola created a platform that empowers and educates women to achieve financial independence to live life on their terms. Now, Clever Girl Finance is one of the biggest women-centric finance platforms in the U.S., with a current audience of more than 185,000 followers on Instagram.
Bola Sokunbi jots it all down as to empowering women with the knowledge regarding finances. Her main goal is to help women become accountable, ditch debt, save money and build real wealth. This book is recommended to everyone and especially young women who want to take control of their finances now and in the future. Bola book has inspired me personally and becomes aware of finances.
